I loved The Perils of Autumn: Return to Autumn by Rusty Blackwood and once again spending time with my friends at the Landon Lawns Stables. Cyril and Autumn are the owners of the stable and immediately pull you right into their lives. Also living at the very prestigious horse farm is Agnes, the long-time friend, and housekeeper who is always there when needed. William and Manfred are also old-time friends, and really considered part of the family. The two keep the horses and stables running in perfect harmony and order. The thorn in everyone’s side is Duff, the winning jockey, thinking he is better than the rest and everyone is out to get him but he is usually the cause of the trouble. When William and Manfred find out secrets about Duff that he would like to keep in his past, it gets ugly. The Perils of Autumn begins in the 1970s and we travel through the years to the early 2000s, sharing the good, the bad, the sad, and the happy.

I felt the love that Cyril and Autumn had for each other and their two young children; the love they gave each special horse, the caring for their friends, and doing whatever was necessary for each one of them. This book is a winner and I think it would be an award-winning TV series or movie (I can even imagine the cast). I cannot say enough good things about The Perils of Autumn: Return to Autumn. I stayed up late and ignored my daytime chores to be in the stables with my friends. I strongly urge you to put this on the very top of your reading list; it will not disappoint. This book is so well written by Rusty Blackwood; her descriptions, her emotions, and her knowledge of the subject are unbeatable. Again, all I can say is that this is a must-read – you will be glad you did.

The Perils of Autumn: Return to Autumn by Rusty Blackwood is book two in the contemporary suspense series that follows the life of a woman of thirty named Autumn Leeves-Landon and her significantly older husband, Cyril Landon. The couple has now been married for a handful of years and has a young daughter named Abigail. The family lives on a vast estate where Landon Manor is situated, and the tradition of raising thoroughbreds continues, although not without the difficulties that formulate the book’s primary plot and tie into its subplots, which are all exceptionally well executed. When it comes to the Landon Lawns’ race jockey named Duff Taylor, all bets are off, both literally and figuratively speaking.

I admit that going into The Perils of Autumn unsettled me as a result of the relationship between Autumn and Cyril, her husband who was over twice her age. However, the story is wonderfully written. Whereas the previous book in the series homed in on the relationship between the now-married pair, this installment digs deeper into the running of the estate, the business of thoroughbreds and racing, and some truly spectacular suspense that kicks the tension factor up several notches. My favorite character who Rusty Blackwood has turned into flesh and blood is the Landons’ devoted housekeeper Agnes, who I wish would let me take up her tray for a bit so she could rest. Discussions of a potential sibling for Abby, whether intended or by happenstance, do circle the wagons back into relationship territory. This is a series that will likely appeal to older readers and has all of the right components for a Hallmark movie. Recommended.

The book Return to Autumn: Part 1, written by Rusty Blackwood, is a compelling tale that grabbed my interest right away. The Meadows of Kentucky are the setting for the story.

The action happens in 1976. On February 24, 1972, Autumn Rose Leeves-Landon, now 30 years old, suffered the sudden deaths of her mother and best friend Abigail. Before Autumn gave birth to her daughter, whom she named Abby Rose Alice, it happened a month earlier. She had wanted her daughter to carry both her own name and the name of her grandmother in order to honor her husband’s first wife of 25 years, who had been well-respected and for whom Autumn had grown to have a great deal of admiration.

Abby, who was 4 years old, was a determined, energetic, intellectual child with blonde ringlets and blue eyes. Her smile could melt the coldest heart.

The moment they first met one another, Cyril and Autumn were attracted to one another. Autumn and Cyril were married following the loss of Cyril’s wife, and they are now the parents of their small children. Agnes, Cyril’s housekeeper buddy, is always there for him.

Manfred Montgomery and William Brown were aware that Duff was keeping their lord in the dark. Sadly, they lacked compelling evidence to support their case against him. They need evidence before they can tell Cyril they are worried. To learn more about Duff’s secret, read this account.

Amazing chemistry exists between Autumn and Cyril. I cherished their partnership. A cinematic adaptation of this tale would be fantastic. I wholeheartedly urge my fellow readers to read this book. The narration flows well and is effective. This book’s readers would adore every page. I like how the author’s writing style makes it simple for readers to follow the plot.

This is the second part of the series and it’s more engaging and adventurous. Take a journey back into the green Meadows of Kentucky, where passion, sorrow, devotion, and decades-old secrets resurface once more…

Rating: 5/5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Return to Autumn brings the reader return to Landon Lawns Stables, four years on from what happened in The Perils of Autumn. Returning in April 1976, this highly emotive, tastefully written sequel revisits Autumn Rose Leeves-Landon as mother and wife, living with heartbreak behind her but with the strength beside her husband, Cyril Landon.

Autumn’s existence is defined not merely by the deep love she carries for Cyril and their boisterous daughter Abby Rose Alice, but by ghosts of the past as well—notably, her mother’s inexplicable and swift death and being her best and closest friend.

With steely resolve, she advocates for healthcare advancements in her rural community despite it all while navigating the eternally insatiable life of horse racing at Landon Lawns.

Why This Sequel Shines:

• A Timeless Romance:
Autumn and Cyril’s relationship is the emotional core of the novel—tender, mature, and respectful. Their romance has a sense of hard-won longevity, a welcome respite from the usual whirlwind romances.
• Engaging Setting:
Blackwood brings the 1970s Kentucky countryside to life, weaving a rich environment around Landon Manor, the stable, and the close-knit community they support.
• Suspenseful Undertones:
The Duff Taylor subplot, the mysterious jockey with a shady history, introduces tension. As Manfred Montgomery and William Brown try to get to the bottom of things, readers are drawn into a slow-burning mystery full of secrets and suspicion.

• Strong Female Lead:
Autumn is a richly nuanced protagonist—tough but fragile, motherly but ambitious. She’s not merely responding to her life—she’s creating it.

Writing Style & Flow:
Rusty Blackwood’s writing is clear, lyrical, and emotionally engaging. Her pacing is measured, her descriptions vivid, and her dialogue convincing. The story moves along smoothly with a fluidity that speaks to her skill and mastery as a storyteller. She clearly knows how to keep a reader interested without using gimmicks or melodrama.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a romance that matures like fine wine, with a mix of heartfelt drama, suspense, and nostalgic charm, Return to Autumn is a must-read. It’s ideal for fans of multigenerational sagas, rich emotional storytelling, and character-driven plots.

Recommended for: Lovers of family sagas, Hallmark-style dramas, horse racing settings, and stories about healing after loss.

Bonus Idea: This whole series is all but crying out for a TV miniseries adaptation—picture Downton Abbey crossed with Kentucky horse country.

Return to Autumn by Rusty Blackwood is a beautiful story about family, love, and life’s ups and downs. It continues from The Perils of Autumn, picking up the story four years later. It takes us back to Landon Lawns Stables in Kentucky, where Autumn now lives happily with her husband Cyril and their little daughter Abby. Their housekeeper, Agnes, is still there too, like part of the family. Reading this felt like I was visiting people I already knew and missed.

The book shows how life keeps moving, no matter what happens. Autumn is still holding on to some sadness from her past, but she stays strong for her family. I loved seeing how she cares about everyone around her and how much she loves her family. There’s also a bit of mystery in the story. Duff Taylor, a jockey at the stables, has a dark secret. Two other characters, Manfred and William, are trying to find out the truth about him, which keeps you interested and wanting to know what happens next.

I connected with Autumn’s character in a very personal way. Like her, I’ve had to deal with loss and keep going in life. I understood her pain, her strength, and the way she finds happiness in small things. This story reminded me how important family is, and how no matter how hard life gets, there’s always hope and love waiting for you.

I think this book is perfect for anyone who loves simple, heart-touching family stories. It’s not full of drama, but it’s honest and warm. It made me feel peaceful while reading it. If you enjoy stories about love, family, and a little mystery in a quiet countryside setting, you should definitely read Return to Autumn.

Rating-⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rusty Blackwood’s Return to Autumn is a capacious, emotionally tensile continuation that treats romance not as spectacle but as vocation. Set in 1976 Kentucky, the novel situates Autumn Leeves-Landon within a richly textured milieu—Landon Lawns Stables, its stratified household, and a horse-racing ecosystem—rendered with persuasive verisimilitude. Blackwood’s scenes possess a quiet chiaroscuro: domestic tenderness and pastoral calm are crosshatched with sorrow’s afterimage and communal obligation. The result is a narrative that feels durably inhabited rather than theatrically staged.

What most impressed me is the novel’s mature conjugal ethic. Autumn and  English Equestrian Horsemaster Cyril Landon embody a partnership predicated on reciprocity, restraint, and care—an antidote to the performative ardor common to the genre. Autumn’s advocacy for rural healthcare confers gravitas, giving the love story civic stakes and moral grain. Parallel to this, the Duff Taylor intrigue functions as a hermeneutic thread: head groom Manfred Montgomery and foreman William Brown pursue a past shrouded in elision and rumor, a slow-burn inquiry that supplies narrative torque without cannibalizing the intimate drama.

Blackwood’s prose is lucid yet lapidary: sentences carry a measured cadence, images are precise rather than rococo, and dialogue feels lived-in, not expository. Her pacing is deliberative; scenes accrue significance through accretion, not contrivance. I especially admired the text’s sensory specificity—the thrum of the stables, the ritual of care, the social choreography of manor and yard—which lends the book its sociohistorical texture. If there is a caveat, it is that the meticulousness occasionally verges on didactic, particularly in policy-adjacent conversations; even so, these moments clarify theme and never derail momentum.

Personally, I valued the novel’s refusal of melodrama. Grief is handled with an elegiac steadiness, ambition with ethical nuance, and the mystery with pragmatic intelligence.

Highly recommended

Set in 1976, this touching story follows Autumn Rose Leeves-Landon, a woman of deep resilience who has endured profound loss yet continues to push forward with grace. Four years earlier, on February 24, 1972, Autumn’s world was shaken when she suddenly lost both her mother and best friend, Abigail. The tragedy occurred just a month before she gave birth to her daughter, Abby Rose Alice. The choice of name carried immense meaning, not only honoring the memory of her late friend and mother but also paying respect to her husband’s first wife, who had been regarded with admiration within the community. This thoughtful union of names reflects Autumn’s strength, compassion, and sense of legacy.

At the heart of the story is Abby, now four years old, who shines brightly as a source of joy after a period of hardship. With golden ringlets, sparkling blue eyes, and a smile radiant enough to lift any spirit, Abby embodies hope and determination. She is described as lively, intelligent, and full of charm, the very essence of childhood innocence and curiosity. Her presence portrays a kind of healing balm for Autumn, reminding readers how light can emerge even from overwhelming darkness.

The narrative is beautifully paced and vividly expressed, inviting the reader to remain invested from the opening to the final page. Rusty Blackwood’s prose is lucid, professional, and evocative, carrying emotional weight without ever straying into monotony. The author has a knack for crafting a story that resonates, interweaving loss, renewal, and community spirit. This novel not only provides a moving story but also demonstrates the author’s thoughtful mind and ability to hold a reader’s attention throughout.

    Return to Autumn
Part-1 of the 2 part sequel to the Perils Of Autumn
    By: Rusty Blackwood
    Ratings:10/10
The story returns readers to the lush, drama-filled world of Landon Lawns Stables, where horses are not the only things running at full speed. Set in April 1976, this sequel reintroduces Autumn Leeves-Landon, her husband Cyril, and their young daughter, Abby, in a new phase of life at Landon Manor. It’s been four years since we last saw this family, and while the time that has passed has seen growth and change, the undercurrents of drama and tension remain just as strong. One of the highlights of the story is how the author brings familiar characters back to life with such depth. Autumn, now more mature and a mother, carries her past with a grace that hints at her inner strength.

Cyril, her husband, remains a rock, though it’s clear that both he and Autumn are still navigating the complexities of their relationship. Agnes Harris, the ever-dedicated housekeeper, continues to be a steadying presence, and it’s easy to see why she’s such a fan favorite. However, the real heart of Return to Autumn lies in the ongoing drama at the stables. Manfred Montgomery, the head groom and trainer, and William Brown, the stable foreman, are still on the trail of jockey Duff Taylor, whose past is shrouded in mystery. What really drives the plot is the slow unraveling of Duff’s secrets, which have been building for years.

The intrigue surrounding his involvement in a previous racing incident keeps the suspense high, and each chapter feels like a step closer to uncovering the truth. The author’s ability to weave together the personal and the professional, the love stories and the betrayals, makes this a compelling read. There’s a perfect balance of romance, suspense, and emotional depth, and the characters’ development feels natural and earned. The tension between the characters, combined with the looming threat of what’s to come, keeps the pages turning quickly. It’s clear that the stakes have never been higher, both on the racetrack and in the lives of those involved.

Fans of The Perils of Autumn will find Return to Autumn a worthy continuation of the story. If you love rich, character-driven drama set against the backdrop of the horse racing world, this is a book you won’t want to miss.
The Meadows of Kentucky once again come alive in a way that’s both thrilling and heart-wrenching, and with a cliffhanger of an ending, you’ll be anxiously awaiting the next installment.
