Rusty’s August Newsletter 2020 …

An insightful Hi to everyone, and welcome to my August literary news for 2020. Hope everyone is keeping well and living your lives ‘normally’ with laughter, good conversation, and most of all no fear. Fear is strategically used to control. I refuse to be controlled, and I hope you feel the same.

This will be another condensed Newsletter as there is really nothing to report. Brick and mortar bookstores are open but still not engaging authors for public events such as meet & greet, readings, or signings and I really must admit to the frustration this brings along with losing supporters and followers because they cannot engage with their favourite authors, again because of ‘control’. I can only speak for myself, but I am certain many, if not all the authors I personally know in St. Catharines and throughout the entire Niagara Peninsula will agree. As an independent published author, it’s hard enough to keep one’s name and work before the public’s eye at any given time, but especially when you are not allowed to be present before them.

“Online Outlets”

Maybe it’s no wonder readers of today say “online is where it’s at”. Without the venues the internet provides, each author may as well close their books forever. Books do not write themselves; characters do not invent themselves, and a story untold is the same as a story never written. I often wonder if readers ever think about this. I also wonder their thoughts on it. Would you miss me and my work if we no longer existed? I know I certainly would miss the work of my favourite author. So, we turn to the coveted internet to which I am most grateful for having and using to spread the word of my work. Press Releases are great, as well as a must, but one cannot issue a Press Release everyday. Therefore, I use as many online book marketing media sites as I can. Do watch for a new schedule for my 5-star, multi-award-winning romantic drama, The Perils of Autumn, as FEATURED BOOK on Awesome Gang, plus their Newsletter and assorted social media, beginning September 2nd, and running for two days. I will mention the novel’s October feature when it draws closer. Awesong Gang’s online address is: https://awesomegang.com/

“Recap”

I have written five full-length novels, three of which are available on Amazons worldwide, and personally signed copies directly through me by contacting me at my official website https://rusty-blackwood.com, or by writing me at writerrusty@hotmail.ca.

“Passions in Paris”

Travel to the most romantic city in the world at the cusp of the 21st Century, and join Canadian author Joy Wychmere and Irish actor/musician Cullen Malone as they reunite a passionate love thought lost. Can love truly stand the test of time, or be completely lost to death? Find out as you read a rediscovered diary, lost for 40 years, that now takes you on an incredible journey you never thought possible.

“Willow’s Walk”

Love can be anything you want it to be, or can it? There are times when things are not as they appear, and to blindly follow them is the worst mistake you could ever make. Just ask Willow Sutherland-Crosby as she takes you through an outstanding journey, one that you will not soon forget.

*Working cover for Return to Autumn

Work is steadily progressing on Return to Autumn, the exciting sequel to The Perils of Autumn. I must admit it’s been difficult to get into the right mindset to work, but when I do, I find my time spent at this whimsical stable the best possible place to be. I hope you will feel the same as you open this entertaining novel and return to this fast-paced equestrian story, a page-turner that is guaranteed to ‘whisk you away’, coming in early 2021.

I offer you a short excerpt from Chapter 10: If I Am Exceptionally Careful

Quietly entering his bedroom suite, Cyril suggested Abby sit contentedly on the sofa, and enjoy the lovely pictures in his wife’s Little Golden Books collection while he woke her mother to have a chat. After she was settled into a wonderland of whimsy, Cyril strolled to the bed where his wife lay sleeping soundly in the same position in which he had left her.

Settling on the mattress beside her, he innocently run his right hand up the smooth fabric covering her left hip, as he softly said, “Darling, I need you to wake. There are a few things that require discussion.” She did not stir, and he repeated himself twice. Finally, she opened her eyes, rolled onto her right side, and looked about as if she didn’t know where she was. “Tis fine, my love,” Cyril soothed, and instantly patted her thigh. “I regret to wake you. You do need your rest, and you looked so lovely when I entered the room, but I truly require your audience.”

“Hmm,” she mused as her husband’s face came into focus, “I was really zonked. Mm, I don’t ever remember feeling so wiped-out. Then again, anesthesia gases do tend to linger in the system. Where is Abby?”

Gesturing toward the sofa, he answered, “In the land of fairies, I expect. The delightful characters are keeping her occupied while we chat.”

“Okay, as long as she’s gentle with those books. I don’t want them damaged in any way. As you know, they are not only valuable, they are most dear to me.”

Nodding his head, he acknowledged, “I know; she is fine. She is simply viewing the wonderful artwork and trying to sound out basic words we have been studying.”

“Well, if you say so. What did you want to discuss?”

Cyril sat fidgeting, unsure of what he was about to say. He did not want to upset her, nor did he want to argue, but what he needed to talk about could no longer wait.

“As you know, the steeplechase is happening this Saturday and, well, Dan is entered, and Duff was to ride him. However, I just found out that Danny is refusing to let Duff mount him, which brings me to inquire … well … if I am exceptionally careful …”
