ROMANTIC FICTION AUTHOR RUSTY BLACKWOOD’S JULY NEWSLETTER 2018 …

Hey there everyone! Welcome to my news of July for 2018!

This month has been a hot one by way of temperatures soaring well up the thermometer. If things truly balance out, then we can expect frigid temps well below zero come this winter. It has been something else, and I hope wherever you are, vacationing or otherwise, you are coping with it as best you can.

For a couple of years now, I have not done public events over the summer months, but it’s never too soon to begin the fall calendar regarding events. I have just begun mine, one event in so far, and planning on a couple of others. My new novel, The Perils of Autumn, is coming this November, but I am still doing promotion for my celebrated, 5-star award-winning romantic fiction drama, Willow’s Walk for September, October, and possibly early November. In a way it is sad to see the promotion of a title carrying one’s name come to an end, though that does not mean the title is done, or going away –  quite the opposite in fact. Willow’s Walk, Passions in Paris: Revelations of a Lost Diary, as well as all my titles are always available at Amazon, Create Space, Barnes & Noble, Indigo, and many other fine retailers, and they can also be obtained directly from me.

My first confirmed book signing for Willow’s Walk is happening on the Saturday of our Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, on October 13th, from 1 – 4 pm at Fairview Mall Chapters-Indigo in St. Catharines, Ontario. This is my first time back to this outlet in quite some time, so I am hoping to see all those whom I haven’t seen in a long while. I am looking forward to it. It is with excitement and pride that I can announce I am one chapter away from finishing The Perils of Autumn. I have enjoyed writing this story so very much. There were times I felt as if I was there, watching the beautiful horses do their thing, while the suspense of the story grew with each page completed. Soon it will be in revisions, then publication, and release. As a writer and Indie author, I cannot begin to describe how it feels standing on the edge of a new venture and title. It is both thrilling and nerve-wracking all at the same time, but I have experienced these feelings many times. One would think with each title it would feel differently, but it doesn’t, it only entices another story to begin. I have even thought about doing an immediate sequel to The Perils of Autumn as there is so much to reveal in the story that is being told, but I have not decided whether I will. When I get to the end of the last chapter, I will have decided. A touch of suspense here, I know, but it is for me as well. I have written a two-part series before and had not the best results with it; the same can be said about writing a grand scale novel that is too long. Sometimes a decision like that is difficult. In fact, let me know what you think.

Now for those who have been following the progression of the new novel, I share another excerpt, this time from Chapter 48: Plans in the Making

The next morning found Autumn on the phone with her mother, discussing the latest developments, as well as how she perceived the future. She was certain her mother had begun to look at her relationship with Cyril in a more favorable light. Still, she kept the fact that he had proposed marriage a secret, for now.

“When do you think he’ll be home?” Abigail questioned, the tone of her voice sincere.

Autumn had yet to see her man this morning, so she could only answer based on the last time she had.

“He’s got a rather long row to hoe. Healing from back surgery is not like having your appendix removed. The surgeon fused the fracture successfully, but it’s going to be a while before he’s back on his feet. Cyril’s main concern was whether he could ride once he heals, and of course the doctors could not guarantee that, however, Dr. Boxford told me that Dr. Shapiro tried his best to make that possible. We just have to keep our fingers crossed.”

“Yes,” Abigail agreed, “we do. Thank you for calling last evening to fill me in. Are you coming into the hospital this morning?”

“Of course, Momma, as soon as I ready myself. I’m taking a cab today as William is busy assisting Manfred in the practice ring. Until Cyril’s riding fate is known, they are taking over preparing the horses that are slated for upcoming events.”

“How soon will that be, dear?”

“There is a show-jumping event on April tenth at the Lexington Arena. Dapper Dan will be competing, and Manfred will be riding him. That day is also Cyril’s sixtieth birthday. I am planning a celebration for him following the event, and I’m hoping you can come.”

“That is a Saturday; also, Easter weekend. I usually hold a huge sale at the store the Saturday of Easter weekend.”

“Well surely Mrs. Jenkins can oversee that, Momma, it’s his birthday, it’s special, and I already know that he’s going to be depressed because of not riding the event that weekend. I know he had his heart set on it, the same as he did the steeplechase. In a way that steeplechase was a Godsend, even the way it turned out, because if he hadn’t collapsed, I would have never insisted he have a new set of X-rays done and the fracture would have gone undetected. It could have ruptured, and had it, the entire outcome would be different.”

“Yes, I suppose it would. I’m just not chomping at the bit to come back out there.”

“Hmm, I can understand, Momma, but I promise there will be no nonsense from Agnes, and definitely no repeat of that last farce. Cyril was most indignant with her, and rightfully so. You can be certain she will watch her step.”

“What time are you planning his celebration?”

“Well let’s see, the show-jumping event is scheduled for eleven; they always begin on time, and the actual competition usually takes about two hours. That puts us past one. It takes no more than a half hour to return home – and I can even make that another hour to allow the crew and Dapper Dan time to arrive home. I could plan the party for five, or there about. What do you think?”

“Sounds like you have it figured out, daughter, but are you allowing yourself time enough to prepare everything?”

“I thought I’d have it catered. There is a well patronized caterer located right beside Meadows Cab Company. If I contact them right away, that should allow plenty of time, and it also takes the onus off me to cook. You know how much I love to do that?”

Chuckling, Abigail replied, “Ah, yes, dear, I do know. Well, I know my being there is important to you —”

“Momma,” Autumn cut in, “it would mean a lot to Cyril as well. He truly wants to get to know you. I want that too so, will you come?”

“Um … mm … ah,” Abigail teased, elongating the moment. “I will be there. As the delightful William will be tied up most of the day, I shall hire a cab to and from.”

Breathing a sigh of relief, Autumn said, “Thank you, Momma, and don’t worry. Cyril will know about this; I don’t believe in surprise parties, and that way he will already have Agnes in line. Now, I really must get the lead out and boot it to the hospital. I so hope Cyril will be awake this morning, though I won’t hold my breath, but at least I can sit with him.”

“When he is awake, my child, do give him my best wishes for a most speedy recovery. I assume he’s in intensive care?”

“Mm-hmm, for a couple of days anyway. I should think he’ll be in his own room by the first of the next week. I’ll let you know, maybe you’d like to visit him with me.”

“That would be nice, Autumn. I’ll plan on that. You take care, and we’ll chat soon.”

“That we will, Momma. Love you lots.”

“I love you too, dear. Bye for now.”
