Greetings readers, fans, and followers of my work! Here we are at the end of yet another month. Time is surging, so it seems, and we have no option but to surge along with it.

May has been an interesting month for me, I hope for you also. For me, it began with further chapters of my upcoming romantic fiction drama, The Perils of Autumn, planned for release this coming November, and if all goes as well as it has, that release projection should be realized. I shall speak further about Perils of Autumn as well as share a short excerpt a bit later in this Newsletter.

The weekend of Mother’s Day, Saturday May 12th. to be exact, found Willow and I at Pen Center Coles in St. Catharines for my signing entitled, ‘Willow Celebrates Mother’. What a lovely afternoon it was, greeting friends, chatting with readers who have purchased Willow and greatly enjoyed it, and meeting new readers. It is all part of a book-signing event, and the special ingredients that make a successful one. My new romantic fiction drama, The Perils of Autumn, is coming along nicely. I have always loved horses, and to create a story that is set on a fictional thoroughbred stable, is a sheer delight for me. The Perils of Autumn is primarily set in the early 1970’s, and tells the heart gripping story of Autumn Leeves, a newly graduated nurse who is sent to care for the terminally ill wife of English equestrian master, Cyril Landon, owner of Landon Lawns Stables, in the posh community known as The Meadows located one half hour out of Lexington, Kentucky. The successful stable also employs top English jockey, Duff Taylor, who holds a dark secret that he will go to any length to protect.

I am thrilled to bring this entertaining story to life, and I would like to share an except for your enjoyment from Chapter 46: Underlying Problems …

“I don’t know, Miss Autumn. I just cannot come to terms with never riding again. At least the present medication allows me to ride. As long as I watch the amount, I should be able to continue to compete, at least for this season. I can’t explain it, my dear, but I feel as if I owe it to Alice. We always were active throughout the season, every event we could manage. It is part of me. How can I turn my back on that?”

Autumn was torn, knowing he would never confess what he just had if he did not feel trapped. She was a nurse, she knew the odds, but she also loved him and must put his welfare first by trying her best to convince him to do what she felt was right.

“Thank you for sharing that,” she replied lovingly, “it would not have been easy. I have come to know you exceptionally well and I admire every aspect of you, but I want what is best for you. Your wellbeing must come ahead of anything else. I am certain Alice would agree with me. If she were here I have no doubt of what she would say to you. I also think — in fact I know what she would say. You know also.”

He stared into her dark eyes as if he were searching for the answer. Finally, he said, “You want me to have the surgery, don’t you?”

“It is not what I want, sweet Cyril, but what you must decide for yourself. I do agree that surgery is the most plausible course, at least at this point. We will cross the next bridge when we come to it.”

He sat breathing deeply, knowing she was right. He must trust her instincts, regardless of any self-doubt he may be struggling with.

“When Dr. Boxford comes back, have him arrange the surgery. My sixtieth birthday, as well as Easter is just a bit over two weeks away. If he could arrange the procedure later this week I should be able to celebrate both events when they arrive, don’t you think?”

“It will depend on how fast you convalesce and heal, but you should. I’ll call Dr. Boxford back in.”

In a matter of minutes, the doctor was at his desk arranging surgery for early Friday morning of that week. He would require his patient to undergo pre-op on Wednesday morning, and arrive Thursday evening for early morning surgery on Friday. William, who had driven the couple to the appointment that morning, had arrived to drive them home. As they rode along Cyril informed him of the upcoming procedure, and that he and Manfred would be required to once again step up to the plate. Cyril never once doubted the ability of his foreman nor his trainer, each capable of producing miracles when asked.

“Don’t sweat it, boss, we can handle anything that comes our way. Your health is what is most important here; never doubt we are there for you, however required.”

“I do not know what I would do without you two,” Cyril observed, his eyes misting as he spoke. “With you and Manfred in the stables, Duff riding Fenn’s Fancy and Black Devil on the track, and Miss Autumn at my side, how can I lose? Our stables have always been top contender in all areas, and ’tis where it shall remain.”

Autumn embraced her man, as she said, “I’ll call Mother when we get home and fill her in on what’s going on. She was most concerned the night of the steeplechase when we last spoke. I believe she is warming up to us being together, at least that’s the impression I’m getting, and I’m glad. Now, I want you to let this pain med dissolve under your tongue. It is fast acting, will relax you, and quickly alleviate the pain in your back.”

As the limo sped along, the freshly medicated horseman snuggled against his private nurse, closed his eyes, and let his anxiety dissipate along with the pain.
