Top Ranking Romantic Fiction Indie author Rusty Blackwood’s Views on The Great Erotica Panic of 2013

The title says it all folks! What next, you might ask, and my answer to that is simply,”What next, indeed?!” Besides the importance of any self-respecting writer denouncing book banning, as well as standing tall while waving the red flag and calling out the authorites with regard to anyone who tries such a despicable act, the content in the recent article being carried by the always insightful writer’s watchdog, Writer Beware®, opens the eyes a tad wider with regard to what has been recently going on, the significance of it, and how it affects all Indie authors regardless of their chosen genre.

Take this link: http://accrispin.blogspot.ca/2013/10/thoughts-on-great-erotica-panic-of-2013.html to read what I am talking about.

I must admit I find these actions appalling, to say the least. Whatever happened to ‘freedom of speech’? Apparently one does not have the right to voice their views, thoughts, inspirations through word in the way they feel and perceive them to be, either that, or the censors of such an idiotic act have taken it upon themselves to be both judge and jury enrolled into one. It’s not right, and I’m certain every author out there would agree with me. It is simple, really. If you don’t like what is written in a book, don’t read it – and pay attention to what your children are doing if you don’t want them reading what you feel is not proper – but don’t try to stop others from reading or purchasing what they wish if they so choose. Any site that carries and sells books should realize this simple acknowledgment and abide by it. By the sounds of what this article is saying, the book outlets are more concerned about the light in which they may be viewed then considering the authors whose work brings revenue to these sites, and if it is anything like any outlet or venue selling books, then believe me, what comes to the self-published author by way of monetary compensation is very little compared to what the outlet selling the book receives. It is very much the same as biting the hand that feeds you, and these outlets should open their eyes.

Another aspect I would like to touch on – and some might suggest my words are upholding the ‘Great Erotica Panic of 2013’ by them – is that a lot of authors, and publishers alike, specifically Standard publishers, have a tendency to jump on the bandwagon when it comes to possible lost revenue in their coffers, or ride the coat tails of an author and their work whose title has been blown out of the water by savvy marketing, which in turn entices others to replicate it however they can. Sometimes it’s like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire, so to speak. We all know what happened with the now infamous 50 Shades debacle, and what it unleashed with regard to ‘anything goes attitude,’ which in turn has spawned what has since appeared in the genre of erotica, yet I still say that any author has the right to create their own story and voice it however they feel without being censored in the process, labelled incorrectly, or have their books yanked from the shelves because of ignorance.

Now I shall jump down from my soap-box and bid you adieu for this time. Comments are always welcome, to which I try to reply. And as always, support your local authors as well as all your local talent in the Arts.

Rusty.
